Alani Fujii (GPE Fellow)

Alani Fujii

Pronouns: she/her

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: Ph.D American Studies

Why AACC? I spend lots of time in the Okihiro Library, as one of the only places on campus I feel like I could exist as myself, without the pressure to contort myself to act like I was to “perform mastery” in an Ivy environment. The AACC was the one of the few places on campus that felt like home.

What is your favorite food? Lū Sipi (shout out to Tonga for feeding me so well I dream about this dish); a close second is a good jjajangmyeon.

What is your favorite book? Dear Elia - Mimi Khúc

I am a third year PhD student in the American Studies department, with an affiliation with ER&M. I am interested in the intersection of Black and Indigenous Studies; my project looks towards Hawaiʻi as a place where conversations about racial formations, Indigenous sovereignties, and plantation afterlives, are particularly robust. I am mixed-race Japanese and Black, raised by an immigrant father from Japan, but am learning my heritage language in hopes that I can foster relationships with my family across our language barrier. I enjoy used book stores, staring at trees, yapping sessions, and supporting mutual aid efforts.
