Best, Yale Raga Society Board Back to the Top | Neera Tanden, '96, President of the Center for American Progress on Fairness, Inequality and the Presidential Debate of 2012 Neera will draw on her years of experience on the campaign trail, the fight for health care reform, the White House, Capitol Hill, and the policy advocacy community to discuss how questions of fairness and inequality are arising in the current presidential campaign. She will address inequality in many forms, including rising economic inequality, challenges facing the middle class, tax reform, the fight for LGBT equality, and the recent debates over contraception. Neera is the President of the Center for American Progress, one of the most influential think tanks in Washington. The Center for American Progress, with its sister Action Fund, have played a key role in shaping the debate around the pressing issues facing our nation: from the state of the economy to ending the war in Iraq to health care reform to comprehensive immigration reform to global warming and clean energy to education reform...the list goes on and on. After graduating from YLS, Neera's political career began in the Clinton White House, where she was an associate director for domestic policy and senior advisor to First Lady Hillary Clinton. She went on to campaign for Hillary Clinton's Senate race and served as her legislative director on Capitol Hill. Neera was one of the founding staff of the Center for American Progress, but went on the campaign trail for the Clinton and Obama-Biden presidential campaigns, leading both campaign's policy shops. After the election, Neera joined the Department of Health and Human Services, where she helped to craft and pass the Affordable Care Act. Finally, Neera rejoined the Center for American Progress as Chief Operating Officer before taking the lead of the organization.
